How the EHF European League Men’s New 2026/27 Format Works

Jonas Kepler

32 starting teams, two waves of Champions League transfers and a new Last 16: understand the European League Men’s 2026/27 route and match counts.

The 2026/27 EHF European League Men starts with 32 clubs in eight groups of four, but its knockout field is no longer drawn only from those starting teams. Sixteen group qualifiers are joined by 12 Champions League clubs in the play-offs; two more Champions League clubs enter at the Last 16. That is the central change in the EHF’s new-format explainer.

This is the men’s club competition—not the women’s European League or the national-team EHF EURO. The season opened on 29–30 September 2026, without qualification rounds for the first time, according to the EHF’s opening-round preview.

The route from 32 teams to the finals

Each group-phase club plays six matches: home and away against its three opponents. First and second qualify; third and fourth finish their European season. The European League’s previous main-round stage disappears, with play-offs and a Last 16 now following the groups. The EHF format guide sets out this five-stage route:

Stage Field and progression Scheduled dates
Group phase 32 teams in eight groups; top two in each advance 29 September–2 December 2026
Play-offs 16 qualifiers + 12 Champions League transfers = 28 teams; 14 winners advance 9 February–2 March 2027
Last 16 14 play-off winners + two further Champions League transfers; eight advance 23 and 30 March 2027
Quarter-finals Eight teams; four advance 20–21 and 27–28 April 2027
EHF Finals Men Four teams contest the final weekend in Hamburg 22–23 May 2027

Dates follow the EHF format guide and its line-up announcement, which lists quarter-final legs on 20–21 and 27–28 April. The play-offs, Last 16 and quarter-finals are two-leg rounds. Draws determine the pairings at those stages and the finals’ semi-finals.

Winning a European League group does not provide a knockout-round bye. Both qualifying positions lead to the play-offs, unlike the previous system in which main-round group winners could skip that stage.

Which Champions League teams transfer?

There are two distinct entry points—not a single batch of 14 clubs arriving together:

  • At the play-offs: the third- and fourth-placed teams in each of the Champions League’s six opening groups transfer across. That supplies 12 clubs.
  • At the Last 16: the fifth-placed team in each of the Champions League’s two main-round groups transfers across. That supplies two more clubs.

The sixth-placed teams in those Champions League main-round groups are eliminated from Europe; they do not move into the European League. These distinctions are confirmed in the Champions League format guide. For the full upstream route, see our Champions League Men 2026/27 format explanation.

What the format means for match totals

For a club starting in the European League groups and reaching the final weekend, the full campaign is 14 matches:

6 group matches + 2 play-offs + 2 Last 16 + 2 quarter-finals + 2 finals-weekend matches.

The EHF explainer describes 14 matches as the total for every final-weekend participant. Its breakdown works for European League group-phase entrants, but the published transfer routes mean it cannot apply to every finalist’s European League appearances.

A club transferring at the play-offs would play eight European League matches if it reached the final weekend. With its six earlier Champions League group matches, that would still be a 14-match European campaign.

A club entering at the Last 16 would play only six European League matches if it reached the final weekend. Its combined European campaign would be 20 matches: six Champions League group matches + eight Champions League main-round matches + six European League matches. These are calculations from the Champions League stage counts and the European League route.

For scoring comparisons, keep the competition and entry stage attached to the number. A late entrant’s six-match European League goal total is not directly comparable with a group-phase entrant’s 14-match total. Goals per match removes the simple difference in appearances, but it does not remove the difference in opponents: one sample consists entirely of knockout games, while the other includes six group fixtures.
