How handball teams qualify for the 2028 Olympics

LA28 handball has 12 teams per competition. See the host, world and continental routes, Olympic qualifying tournaments and men's and women's dates.
LA28 handball has 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams. In each competition, the places are split into one host, one world champion, four continental qualifiers and six teams from Olympic qualification tournaments. The United States has the host places in both competitions. The men’s and women’s qualification routes are separate: a country qualifying in one does not qualify in the other. Updated 3 October 2026. The qualification system is dated 12 May 2026; current event listings differ from it on some dates, as noted below.
How the 12 places are allocated
The numbers below are team places, not player quotas. Each column totals 12.
| Qualification route | Men’s places | Women’s places | What earns the place? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host nation | 1 | 1 | USA’s automatic host entry |
| 2027 IHF World Championship | 1 | 1 | Highest-placed eligible team |
| Europe | 1 | 1 | Men’s EHF EURO 2028; Women’s EHF EURO 2026 |
| Americas | 1 | 1 | Combined continental qualification through the 2027 Pan American Games |
| Asia | 1 | 1 | Respective Asian Olympic qualification event |
| Africa | 1 | 1 | Respective African continental qualification event |
| IHF Olympic qualification tournaments | 6 | 6 | Top two teams in each of three four-team tournaments |
| Total | 12 | 12 | Six direct places, six through final qualifiers |

The Americas receive one combined direct place per competition, not separate Olympic places for North America and the Caribbean and for South and Central America. Oceania has no dedicated direct continental berth. Its teams can reach the World Championship through the Asian qualification pathway and then pursue Olympic qualification through world results. Winning two qualifying events does not give a country two Olympic entries. For example, if the men’s 2027 world champion also wins its continental qualifier, that continental place goes to the next-highest-ranked eligible team. If USA wins the World Championship, the world-championship place passes down. These overlap rules are specified in section D of the qualification system.
How the final Olympic qualification tournaments work
For each sex, there are three tournaments containing four teams apiece. First and second qualify; third and fourth miss out. Thus, 12 teams contest the final qualifiers for six Olympic places—not 12 additional Olympic places.
The entrants come from two routes:
- Six World Championship ranking places: initially assigned to teams finishing second through seventh at the respective 2027 World Championship.
- Six continental-event places: assigned to eligible teams through continental results. Normally, the best- and second-best-ranked continents at that World Championship receive two places each, and the third and fourth receive one each, subject to the Oceania exception below.
The initial World Championship seed pairs are second/seventh in Tournament 1, third/sixth in Tournament 2 and fourth/fifth in Tournament 3. Each tournament also receives two continental-route teams. If a World Championship-ranked team qualifies directly through its continental event, the eligible teams below it move up and the World Championship route extends to eighth place or further. That is why a top-seven world finish is not the same as Olympic qualification. Apart from the direct world-championship berth, it normally earns access to another qualifying tournament.
The continental allocation has an Oceania exception: if an Oceania team finishes eighth through 12th at the 2027 World Championship, one designated qualifying-tournament place is allocated through Oceania’s eligible pathway. Otherwise, that place goes to the second-best-ranked continent. Source: qualification system, QS6 provisions.
Key qualification dates
The men’s and women’s calendars differ substantially. The May 2026 qualification system lists these dates:
- Women’s European direct place: EHF EURO, 3–20 December 2026.
- Men’s world-championship direct place: 13–31 January 2027, in Germany.
- Men’s European direct place: EHF EURO, 13–30 January 2028. The men’s African qualifier is listed for January 2028, with exact dates unconfirmed.
- Final women’s qualifiers: 28 February–5 March 2028.
- Final men’s qualifiers: 3–9 April 2028.
The final qualifying-tournament windows should not be read as confirmed daily match schedules. The women’s African qualifier remains undated in the qualification system.
For three other events, current listings need to be distinguished from the May document:
- Americas direct places: the Canadian Olympic Committee lists the Lima 2027 Pan American Games as 23 July–8 August 2027, rather than the qualification system’s 16 July–1 August. These are the overall Games dates, not the handball match schedule. Source: Team Canada’s Lima 2027 page.
- Women’s world-championship direct place: the IHF event page lists 30 November–19 December 2027, in Hungary; the qualification system gives a 1 December start. Source: IHF event listing.
- Asian direct places: the Asian Handball Federation lists 3–12 May 2027 for the men’s qualifier and 27 September–6 October 2027 for the women’s qualifier, with venues still to be decided. The men’s dates differ from the qualification system’s provisional autumn 2027 window; the women’s dates were left unconfirmed there. See the AHF’s men’s event page and women’s event page.
When following results, distinguish three outcomes: an Olympic berth, entry into a final Olympic qualifier, or neither. A world or continental placing can deliver either of the first two, depending on the route and teams already qualified.
