Handball World Championship Final Goals by Year, 1954–2025

Combined goals in all 104 IHF World Championship finals and third-place matches since 1954, men's and women's, with the goals-per-final trend fitted by decade.
This table holds the score of every IHF World Championship final and third-place match with a decided result: 52 finals and 52 third-place matches from 1954 to 2025, 28 men’s editions and 24 women’s. It is the complete record for both matches; the only editions absent are those decided by a round-robin with no final (1938 men’s; 1975, 1978, 1982 women’s). The first final in the table finished Sweden 17–14 Germany for 31 goals; the latest, the 2025 women’s final, Norway 23–20 Germany, produced 43.

The World Final Gains About 5.4 Goals a Decade
A straight line fitted through the combined score of all 52 finals, men's and women's together, rises +5.4 goals per decade and explains 57% of the variation from one final to the next. Fitted separately, the men's final rises +4.8 goals a decade (r² 0.54) and the women's +6.6 (r² 0.69). The third-place match moves at a similar pace: +5.7 goals a decade, r² 0.66.
Split at 1990, the 16 finals played before that year averaged 29.6 goals and the 36 finals from 1990 on averaged 52.4: a difference of +22.8 goals, calculated as the difference of the two means. The lowest-scoring final is Czechoslovakia 7–1 Hungary (Women 1957, 8 goals); the highest is Spain 40–34 Croatia (Men 2005, 74 goals). The highest total of any match in the table is the Women 2001 third place, FR Yugoslavia 42–40 Denmark after extra time, 82 goals.
Closeness has not changed the way scoring has. The median winning margin in a final is 3 goals; 7 of the 52 finals were decided by one goal and 3 by ten or more. 15 of the 104 matches went to extra time, 8 of them finals.

How the Numbers Were Made
Source and counting. The rows come from the Tournaments tables in Wikipedia's IHF World Men's and Women's Handball Championship articles, retrieved 2026-09-13. Each edition contributes two rows, the final and the third-place match, with the score split into winner and loser goals and an (ET) or (2ET) marker turned into the extra-time column. Total goals is the sum of the two scores.
The finding. The trend is an ordinary least-squares line of total goals on championship year over all 52 finals; the per-gender slopes and the third-place slope are the same fit on those subsets. The era comparison is the mean total goals of finals before 1990 against finals from 1990 on. The margin figures use winner goals minus loser goals in the final.
Gaps. Editions settled by a round-robin final group have no final match and so no row: the men's championship of 1938 and the women's championships of 1975, 1978, 1982. Only the final and third-place match of each edition are included, so the table describes medal matches, not the whole tournament. The women's championship began in 1957, so its series is shorter than the men's.
