Championship Promotion: Three Teams Go Up in 2026/27

Jonas Kepler

Three teams go up from football’s Championship. See the 2026/27 play-off change and why handball promotion needs a competition-specific answer.

Three teams get promoted from English football’s EFL Championship to the Premier League: the top two automatically, plus the play-off winner. That remains the total for 2026/27, even though the play-offs now include six teams rather than four. EFL regulation 10.1.1(b)

If you mean a handball championship, the number depends on the specific competition and edition. Football’s three-team rule should not be applied to handball results.

Championship promotion in 2026/27

The important distinction is between earning promotion and qualifying for the play-offs.

Final league position Route in 2026/27 Promotion guaranteed?
1st–2nd Automatic promotion to the Premier League Yes
3rd–4th Enter the play-off semi-finals directly No
5th–8th Enter a single-match play-off eliminator No
9th or lower No promotion route through the play-offs No

The opening ties are 5th against 8th and 6th against 7th, hosted by the higher-placed team. The winners reach the two-legged semi-finals: third faces the lowest-ranked remaining team, while fourth faces the other survivor. The semi-final winners then contest the final for the single remaining promotion place. EFL’s official promotion and play-off rules

So finishing third does not mean automatic promotion. Equally, six play-off entrants do not mean six teams go up: only one wins promotion through that route.

Older explanations commonly list 3rd–6th as the play-off positions. That was the format through 2025/26; the expansion to 3rd–8th took effect for 2026/27. BBC Sport’s report on the approved change

What “promotion” means in handball

In handball, check both how many teams advance and where they advance to. A promotion round can lead to another qualifying stage rather than directly to a championship’s final tournament.

For example, the men’s EHF EURO 2028 promotion round was scheduled for 7 and 11 January 2026, with six national teams in three two-legged ties. Its three aggregate winners earned places in the 32-team qualifiers—not directly in the EURO finals. EHF’s explanation of the promotion round

For a handball promotion question, identify the country or federation, club or national-team competition, men’s or women’s category, age group and season. Those details determine which rules apply; “the Championship” alone does not.
